In a recent media segment with talkSPORT 2, Tottenham Hotspur legend Ossie Ardiles shared his thoughts on the speculation surrounding Christian Eriksen’s future at North London and said, “It looks to me like he has put his mind on a move – that he wants to go somewhere else.
“And if that is the case it’s futile for the club to try and keep a player when he wants to leave.
“I won’t say he’s not happy with us, because he is, but his mind is trying to play somewhere else, and the best thing is to part company.”
The Denmark international has been heavily linked with a switch to Real Madrid and Manchester United in the recent past, but a deal has failed to materialise thus far (via the Evening Standard). Even though Ardiles makes a lot of sense with his comments, the fact remains that Eriksen is still a Tottenham Hotspur player. Thus, Spurs have every right to play ‘hard-ball’ and not give up on retaining the Danish talent this summer.
Eriksen’s Highs and Lows At North London
The 27-year-old has been at the centre of everything good that the North London giants have achieved under Mauricio Pochettino’s stewardship over the past few seasons. However, the lack of silverware has frustrated everyone associated with Tottenham, so it is no wonder that Eriksen is trying to depart the club in search of more trophies this summer.
As long as Spurs decide to sell him to a foreign club, they would be fine but only if Daniel Levy chooses to invest the money generated from Eriksen’s sale to rebuilding Pochettino’s squad.
Losing Eriksen: Big Blow For Spurs?
The Tottenham boss has already managed to acquire both Jack Clarke from Leeds United and Tanguy Ndombele from Olympique Lyonnais in this transfer window. So losing Eriksen in this off-season will be a bitter pill to swallow for Spurs as they try to mount a realistic title charge in the English top-flight next season.
The Denmark international has scored some important goals for the London side over the past couple of seasons. He is also one of the most creative players in Pochettino’s squad. However, if the Dane has his heart set on a move away from the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, then it makes sense for Spurs to let him depart this summer as he has been a great and loyal servant to the club.
Should Pochettino Comply With Ardiles’ Wishes?
Pochettino should consider recruiting more playmakers to his squad if he wants to cope well with Eriksen’s absence in the upcoming campaign. All in all, it might be a good move for all parties if Spurs listen to Ardiles’ advice and allow the Danish sensation to leave before the start of the new season.
