According to the latest reports from Daily Star as cited by Shields Gazette, Newcastle United are looking to sign Liverpool’s upcoming talent Harry Wilson. Aston Villa are also said to be interested in him, but it is yet not clear whether the two chasing clubs would bring him on loan or permanently.
Wilson enjoyed a terrific campaign for Derby County in the Championship as he ended the season as their top scorer. The winger is currently part of Liverpool’s pre-season camp, and it is yet not clear what kind of role the European Champions will offer him in the upcoming season. There has been a consensus that Klopp might be willing to give him a go and keep him as a backup option.
However, if the Welshman wants to develop further, then sending him away on loan would be a better option as he will likely get more game time. The Magpies have taken some giant strides in the last few weeks of the transfer window, and it seems likely that their recruitment drive will continue.
Where can Wilson fit in?
The 22-year-old usually plays as an inverted winger down the right flank. However, he is also effective as an attacking midfielder. His ability to finish off moves and find the back of the net regularly means that he is much more dangerous from central areas. Wilson often looks to cut on his left foot and drive through the middle instead of hugging the bylines. He doesn’t have the searing pace of many wingers, but he more than makes up for it with his goal-scoring exploits.
The Toon lost a similar player in the form of Ayoze Perez who played as a winger but often drifted inside to support Salomon Rondon. Steve Bruce would be keen to add more attacking firepower, and someone like Wilson can come in handy.
What should Bruce do?
If presented with an opportunity, the new boss should look to sign Wilson permanently for somewhere around £20-25m. However, the ball is firmly in Liverpool’s court, and it remains to be seen what they would do with him. The fact that Liverpool’s front three had an extended season due to national team commitment might mean that Wilson is in Klopp’s plans for the beginning of the Premier League.
Even a loan move is worth considering, and Newcastle fans will hope that they can fend off competition from Aston Villa to sign the Liverpool academy product.
