According to a recent report by the Chronicle, Newcastle United are plotting a move to secure the signature of their former centre-forward Andy Carroll before the start of the new campaign. The same source has revealed that the Magpies are interested in bringing the English striker back to Tyneside. He is currently a free agent after being released by West Ham United earlier this summer.
Why This Move Benefits Both Carroll and Newcastle
It is a move that makes sense for both parties. Carroll is in dire need of proving his fitness, and so Newcastle could provide him with an ideal platform to do so. The Tyneside outfit are working on a strict budget and would need all the help they can get from this off-season.
Steve Bruce was appointed as the new Newcastle boss earlier this month, and so it would be up to him to manage Carroll. The English attacker has been plagued with injuries in recent years. The Gateshead-born talent made just 14 appearances for the Hammers last season, scoring one goal in the process.
The 30-year-old needs to get a regular run of games under his belt if he intends to rekindle his career in English football. He can still be a dangerous proposition for the opposing defenders when he is playing with confidence on the pitch.
What Will The English Striker Bring To Tyneside?
Carroll has a wealth of experience in the English top-flight and has scored 53 goals in 211 appearances thus far. His goal-scoring record is not too bad for a free agent. Therefore, it could prove to be a low-risk, high reward acquisition for the Magpies.
The Toon Army would welcome him back to St. James’ Park with open arms as Carroll is a Geordie who knows the club from inside out. The English frontman is aerially dominant and can be a real handful for any defender inside the opposition penalty box. However, he is yet to prove his fitness, so there is a risk that he might miss out on a lot of matches next season.
Will Carroll Be A Decent Acquisition For Bruce?
Even then, it will be a calculated gamble for the Magpies as he is available for free and won’t complain sitting on Bruce’s bench. Maybe, Carroll could turn out to be a decent addition to the Newcastle frontline if they end up sealing a move for him this summer.
