In a recent interview with RTP (via talkSPORT), Sporting CP president Frederico Varandas has claimed that Bruno Fernandes will only be allowed to leave if the Portuguese outfit receives an offer in excess of £56m for their prized asset during this summer transfer window. Varandas made the club’s intentions clear to RTP when he said (via talkSPORT),
“I don’t know if there are many or if there are few [interested clubs].
“What I know, a lot has been spoken of values, coming to the press, €55m, €62m… for that he doesn’t leave, for sure.”
Fernandes’ Outstanding Season With Sporting CP In The Portuguese Top-Flight
The Portuguese playmaker enjoyed the best season of his playing career when he put in a string of match-winning displays for Sporting in the previous campaign. He was in the form of his life last season, and his remarkable attacking returns helped the Portuguese side clinch a fourth-place finish in the league table.
Fernandes was rewarded for his efforts when he was named in the LPFP Primeira Liga Player of the Year earlier this summer. The Liga NOS prospect scored 32 goals and provided 18 assists in 53 appearances for the Portuguese giants on all fronts in the last term. He has also managed to grab 12 international caps for Portugal and has registered one goal for them thus far.
What Does The Liga NOS Playmaker Offer On The Field?
Fernandes can consistently find the back of the net as he can create chances for himself by making some dangerous runs from midfield. He is a real menace for the opposing defenders as he is a hard man to track in the final third. The Portuguese attacking midfielder has a knack for finding space inside the opposition penalty box which makes him such a potent threat going forward.
The 24-year-old is also an accurate passer of the ball and can retain possession well for his team. However, he has only showcased his worth in the Portuguese top-flight for a season. Hence, it remains to be seen whether he can keep up the same numbers in the upcoming campaign.
Is Fernandes Worth The Price Of Admission?
There is no denying that a player of Fernandes’ ilk will significantly bolster Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s attacking options at Old Trafford. He is precisely the kind of talent who can thrive with regular first-team opportunities at the Theatre of Dreams. However, paying upwards of £56m on a player who is yet to prove his worth outside Portugal does not make sense for the Red Devils.
They would be better off opting for more established players in the transfer market as the risk would be well worth the reward. With Fernandes, Man United would be taking a huge gamble if they decide to splash the cash on him ahead of the new season.
