According to a recent report by the Manchester Evening News, Manchester United are preparing to keep hold of their Chilean winger Alexis Sanchez beyond this summer following a lack of interest from other clubs. Even though the Red Devils are open to selling him this summer, Manchester Evening News state that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is ready to hand the Copa America star some game time when he returns from his recent injury and becomes available for the club’s final pre-season fixtures versus Kristiansund (July 30) and AC Milan (August 3).
In a recent interview (via Manchester Evening News), the Norwegian boss provided an update on Sanchez’s injury and said, “I don’t think Alexis’s injury was too bad. When he’s due back – three weeks after the last game – so when we come back from the tour he’s due back.
“I would expect him to be fit enough to play straight away and train straight away.”
Sanchez’s Frustrations At Old Trafford So Far
Sanchez had to endure an injury-prone campaign with the Red Devils last season as he struggled to get enough first-team starts. Even when he was wearing the famous red jersey of Man United, he failed to make the most out of his opportunities in the previous campaign.
Since completing a switch from Arsenal at the beginning of last year, the 30-year-old has found the back of the net five times while creating nine assists across all competitions. His form has not been good enough to play for a top club like Man United. Thus, Solskjaer would do well to find a buyer for him this summer as the Norwegian head coach could use the money generated from his sale to strengthen other areas of his squad.
What Does The Chilean International Offer On The Pitch?
Sanchez used to be a prolific goal-scorer in the Premier League during his days with Arsenal. He has also been an integral member of the Chilean national side over the past few years, having made 130 appearances and scoring 43 goals for his country thus far.
However, his game has suffered due to injuries and lack of form at Old Trafford. The 30-year-old is a shadow of his former self as he is not the same player he was at the Emirates Stadium. He can still be a decent option from the bench and can score a few important goals for his team when he is playing with confidence on the pitch.
Should The Red Devils Keep Him At The Theatre Of Dreams Beyond This Summer?
Man United should not entertain the idea of retaining his services heading into the new campaign as he won’t add much to Solskjaer’s squad. The Red Devils are better off letting him leave so that they can rebuild and challenge for a top 4 place in the English top-flight next season.
