According to Express, Manchester United could complete the signing of Saul Niguel without the infringement of Atletico Madrid if they agree to meet his release clause. The report claims that the Spanish international has a buyout clause of £135 million and his employers will not be able to prevent a potential transfer if the Red Devils agree to pay that amount. But should they really make a move?
Saul is one of the best midfielders in Europe
Saul is the prime example of the massive improvement and progress Atletico Madrid have gone through under the management of Diego Simeone. The Spaniard has been a member of the Atleti side since 2008, having initially started his youth career at Real Madrid.
However, it wasn’t until the 2015/16 campaign when Saul managed to make his breakthrough into the Atleti lineup. His wonder goal against Bayern Munich, in particular, is what led to his rapid rise to prominence as it ultimately helped Los Rojiblancos reach the final of the Champions League that corresponding season.
Saul has since been a first-team regular at Atletico and has made almost 250 appearances for the club across all competitions. His current contract at Wanda Metropolitano expires in 2026, but his apparent release clause could serve as a massive blow for Atletico.
What can Saul bring to the table?
Saul is a versatile midfielder who can be utilised either as a central or a wide midfielder. As you would expect from any Spaniard, the 24-year-old is technically astute and is capable of playing one-touch football. His excellent composure on the ball, coupled with his neat footwork also makes him a remarkable ball-carrier.
Furthermore, the Atleti superstar is a pressing machine. It is his aggression and willingness to win back possession for his team that makes him one of the best midfielders in Europe.
Should Manchester United make a move for this Spanish international?
Saul would be a huge coup for a Manchester United side that are poised to sell star midfielder Paul Pogba this summer. Furthermore, Ander Herrera has joined PSG after leaving the club while the likes of Nemanja Matic and Fred have struggled with lack of consistency.
The addition of Saul, in that regard, could help Ole-Gunnar Solskjaer solve United’s problems in midfield. He can also be considered as a replacement for Pogba given his technical quality and tenacity in the middle of the park. And at the age of 24, he could be an ideal long-term investment for the Red Devils.
