According to Telegraph, Liverpool have beaten the likes of PSG, Real Madrid and RB Leipzig in the pursuit of Harvey Elliott this summer. It is believed the Fulham youngster is set to join the Reds at Merseyside, thus becoming the second signing for the European champions in the ongoing summer transfer window.
However, being only 16, Elliott cannot sign a professional contract just yet, meaning he will join Liverpool on a schoolboy contract until April of next year when he will pen a three-year professional contract with the club.
Elliott is one of the most talented youngsters in England
Elliott initially started his youth career at Queens Park Rangers before moving to Fulham. He joined the Fulham U-18 side last summer, despite turning just 15 at that time. And his age wasn’t an issue in his performances either, with the youngster netting an impressive five goals and providing four assists in 18 Premier League U-18 matches last season.
The 16-year-old’s performances didn’t go unnoticed as the winger made his first-team debut for Fulham last September in the EFL Cup. He was still a 15 year old at that time. Elliott broke a Premier League record in May when he made a substitute appearance against Wolverhampton Wanderers – becoming the youngest player to feature in a league game, aged only 16 years and 30 days.
He made yet another substitute appearance in the next game against Newcastle United, in what was the last game of the season before the Cottagers were relegated.
Is Elliott a good signing for Liverpool?
Liverpool arguably boast the deadliest attacking unit in Europe, thanks to the offensive trifecta of Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane. But, manager Jurgen Klopp has remained keen on adding more options to his attacking department, especially with the recent injury of Xherdan Shaqiri.
Hence, having a talented academy player like Elliott could prove to be useful for the German mastermind, who, in turn, is known for his proficiency of nurturing young talents. Klopp played a crucial role behind the rise of Mario Gotze, Marco Reus among many others and Elliott could well be the next player to rise to prominence under the tutelage of the ex-Dortmund coach.
