According to a recent report by L’Equipe, Liverpool have attempted to reach out to Barcelona winger Ousmane Dembele to discuss a potential move during this ongoing summer transfer window. However, the same source has also claimed that the Reds will face competition from Bayern Munich in pursuit of the French wide player who does not intend to leave the Nou Camp in this off-season.
L’Equipe has also revealed that the Catalan giants are not eager to let their prized asset depart this summer which will be a bitter pill to swallow for Jurgen Klopp and his chances of landing the French speedster to bolster his squad ahead of the new campaign.
Why Dembele Would Have Been An Ideal Signing For Liverpool
Daniel Sturridge had left the Merseyside club on a free transfer earlier this summer which means that the Reds need to replace the English forward with a quality player. Dembele would have been an ideal fit for Klopp’s brand of football at Anfield as he has blistering pace, which allows him to dribble with the ball at top speed on the wide areas. He would have been a perfect back-up for both Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah as he shares similar traits to those wingers.
The French Talent’s Record For Club And Country
The French sensation has the potential to be a world-class prospect someday, so it is no wonder that Barca are not ready to give up on him just yet. The 22-year-old has made a total of 46 appearances in the La Liga for Ernesto Valverde’s side thus far, scoring 11 goals while grabbing 12 assists in all competitions. At such a young age, he has also managed to secure 21 international caps for France and has registered two goals for his country in the process.
What Does Dembele Offer On The Field?
As stated earlier, Dembele is one of the quickest players in the Spanish top-flight and knows how to find the back of the net consistently. He scored 14 goals and grabbed nine assists in 42 appearances for the Catalans in the last term across all competitions.
However, the French wing wizard has to develop his game and be more productive in front of the opposing goal if he wants to become a household name in European football someday.
What Should Be Klopp’s Play Here?
The addition of a player of Dembele’s potential would have significantly improved Klopp’s squad depth, but the player’s desire to stay at Barca will be a massive stumbling block for the Reds. They would now have to explore the option of finding a suitable alternative in the transfer market or come back with a huge offer to try and convince the champions of Spain to part ways with their talented winger.
Liverpool have shown in the past that they are more likely to do the former rather than the latter as Klopp is in no hurry to tinker with his current squad after winning the UEFA Champions League last season.
