According to a recent report by the Russian news outlet SovSport, Liverpool have been monitoring the development of Zenit St. Petersburg forward Sardar Azmoun. The same source has also claimed that the Reds are impressed by the Iranian striker’s rich vein of form in the Russian top-flight.
In an interview back in 2017 (via the Metro), Azmoun revealed that the Merseyside club were interested in recruiting him when he said, “There were talks of Liverpool having expressed an interest in me during the past winter transfer window.
“However, I did not feel the time to move was right.
“I would have ended up playing a few games and then spent a great deal of time on the bench as Liverpool were only looking to fill a void for a particular part of their season.
“I want to move to a big club to develop as a player and therefore I will time the move with great precision.
“I am sure I will be playing for a top European club in the near future.”
Now that Azmoun has proven his worth in Russian football, maybe he would welcome a change of scenery, especially if he can get the honour of playing for an elite club like Liverpool. Jurgen Klopp remains a long-term admirer of the Iranian prospect so it wouldn’t be a surprise if he tries to recruit him before the start of the new season.
Azmoun’s Stellar Form In The Russian Top-Flight
The 24-year-old has already scored two goals in the Russian Super Cup final against Lokomotiv Moscow this season. He has also been in prolific form in the previous term when he put in numerous goal-scoring displays for his old club Rubin Kazan as well as his current employers, Zenit. The Gonbad born talent scored 17 goals and created seven assists in 33 appearances for both clubs last season across all competitions.
Azmoun also has a remarkable goal-scoring record for the Iranian national team, having registered 27 goals in 44 matches for his nation thus far. The Zenit sensation has been dubbed as the ‘Iranian Messi’ as he has a low centre of gravity which enables him to beat his marker in the final third.
What Does Azmoun Offer On The Field?
The Iranian star has enough pace under his belt to make some well-timed runs behind the opposition backline. Furthermore, he is gradually turning himself into a prolific goal-getter as he is an unforgiving finisher inside the opposing penalty box.
The acquisition of a forward of Azmoun’s quality will undoubtedly improve Klopp’s attacking options at Anfield. He is precisely the type of player who will be a good fit for Klopp’s brand of football at the Merseyside club.
