According to a recent report by the Spanish news outlet El Desmarque, Liverpool are interested in securing the signature of Marco Asensio from Real Madrid. The same source has also claimed that the Reds could land the Spanish wide player for £67.3m with Jurgen Klopp reportedly a big admirer of his talents.
Marco Asensio’s Struggles At The Spanish Capital Last Season
Asensio had to endure a difficult campaign with the Galacticos after he failed to find consistency in his performances on the pitch. Hence, a move away from Madrid could be a welcome change for him this summer as it could reignite his career in European football.
Asensio made a total of 44 appearances for Real Madrid in the previous term, scoring six goals while creating seven assists across all competitions. The Palma de Mallorca born wing sensation has also represented Spain in 22 international matches and has registered one goal for them thus far.
The Spanish winger came through the youth ranks of RCD Mallorca before he agreed to a career-defining switch to join Los Blancos as a teenager in the summer of 2015.
However, Asensio didn’t hit the ground running and was sent out on a season-long loan to Espanyol to continue with his development. He finally managed to break into the Madrid first-team upon his return and has helped his team win the UEFA Champions League in 2017 and 2018.
What Are The Spaniard’s Strengths And Weaknesses?
Asensio is quick and agile on the ball, which enables him to make penetrative dribbles out in the wide areas. The Spanish talent has the eye to pick out a killer pass in the final third and is also a potent goal-threat from long-range. However, he needs to work on being more productive in the offensive end of the field.
Will Asensio Be A Good Fit At Anfield?
The Madrid midfield ace was not firing on all cylinders last season which is a cause of concern for any of this potential suitors. However, he will be a perfect fit for Jurgen Klopp’s style of play at the Merseyside club as he has all the skillset needed to be a success story at Anfield.
There is no doubt that Liverpool needs to recruit an ideal back-up for Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah, so Asensio fits the bill perfectly as he can compete with the likes of Mane and Salah for a place in Klopp’s starting lineup.
