According to the latest reports from Turkish media outlet Fotomac, Leeds United remain in the race for Fenerbahce’s striker Michael Frey. Reports in May from the Yorkshire Evening Post had come out that the Whites are vying for the signature of this striker. However, the Whites face competition from Caykur Rizespor who are a top-flight club in the Turkish division.
Why should Leeds United look to sign a striker?
The Yorkshire outfit played with fire by not offering Kemar Roofe a new contract last summer, and now they run the risk of losing him with Scottish heavyweight Rangers interested. The Englishman has entered the final year of his contract, and the Whites will be hoping that they get another season from their last season’s top scorer at Elland Road.
Patrick Bamford has been underwhelming since he was signed and Tyler Roberts is still learning his trade at this level. Therefore the Whites should look for a striker who can be the difference maker and score 20-25 goals a season.
Is Frey worth signing?
The latest report mentions that Frey is keen on a move to England, so that is a big plus for the Whites if they are looking to sign him. The forward has often been compared to Zlatan Ibrahimovic because of his playing style and physical resemblance.
One of the primary reasons why we feel the Whites might be looking at Frey is because of his terrific work rate. The 24-year-old is known to be aggressive with his pressing, and he is always willing to fall back to help his team out defensively. Frey’s standout attributes are his strength and aggression, and he can be a tough man to get off the ball. The 24-year-old can play as a targetman, and he has got a decent experience of playing in tough competitions like the Europa League.
Often last season we felt that Leeds United were one dimensional and they were overdoing their build-up play. Someone like Frey can be a plan B for them, and he can give his team a more direct route to attack with his hold up play. We think that the Swiss forward is worth considering as he can bring in something different for Bielsa, which is sometimes needed in a game.
One drawback to this signing will be that Frey turned out to be injury prone last season and he managed just five goals. However, he is still 24, so he should be able to make a comeback in the upcoming campaign. He has the potential to score almost every kind of goal, and for the right price, he should be worth considering.
