Leeds United are set to face some tough times in the next few weeks as they have been dealt two big blows. First is that Kiko Casilla is attracting (Marca) interest from Spanish heavyweights Sevilla. They are in for a backup goalkeeper as Sergio Rico is looking for a move away from Spain.
The Casilla Conundrum
Victor Orta not too long ago said that Casilla is happy to stay with Leeds and that notion will be tested heavily in the rest of the transfer window. The Champions League-winning goalkeeper brought in a lot of optimism when he was signed in January, but his performance for the Whites was underwhelming especially during the crunch phase of the season.
Some might feel that he should be replaced. But given the fact that he is extremely comfortable while playing from the back, Bielsa is likely to give him another go in the playing eleven. All he needs to do is sort out his decision making and communication with his defenders.
However, Sevilla are on a recruitment drive as they have signed as many as ten players already in this window and they can definitely lure the Spanish custodian from the Championship. One thing which will go in United’s favour is that Casilla will likely be the second choice for Sevilla. So the goalkeeper might prefer to stay in England where he is the first choice.
Second blow for Leeds United
The second big blow for the Whites is that Kemar Roofe is set to miss a month of action. The good thing is that the injury could have been worse, but scans revealed that it’s not that bad. Leeds United missed out on promotion last season mainly because they were unable to score goals freely and take their chances in the final third.
Roofe was United’s top scorer from last season, and there was no doubt that a lot would have rested on his shoulders this season as well. The Englishman even showed his versatility by playing as an attacking midfielder ever since the departure of Samuel Saiz.
What should Bielsa do?
If Leeds United manages to find someone who fits the bill, then they should look to replace Casilla in this window. Replacing him would be tough as Casilla has the experience and the ability to play in the Bielsa system.
As for a striker, the Whites should look to sign a more standout option who will score 20-25 odd goals a season. Hopefully, this injury to Roofe will open the eyes of the board. They need to learn from last season that they cannot rely too much on young guns during the crunch phase of the season.
