According to the latest reports from the Express, Steven Gerrard is keen on signing a left back in this window. The Gers signed Borna Barisic for £2.2m last season, but the Croatian failed to provide the spark which Rangers needed. He started well but struggled with form and injury after that.
Ideally, we would like to see Gerrard give the Croatian another season at Ibrox to prove himself. But the manager cannot afford to take risks. Apart from Barisic, the club doesn’t have a natural left back as Jon Flanagan is a right back and Andy Halliday is a midfielder. Therefore, the gaffer might be keen on getting a specialist fullback and here are three players we think he can go after.
Milad Mohammadi
The Iranian international played in the Russian top flight last season for Akhmat Grozny. The name might not ring a bell for Rangers fans, but Mohammadi will be remembered for his failed somersault throw-in attempt in the 2018 World Cup against Spain in the dying minutes of the game.
The 25-year-old is currently available on a free transfer and given his pace and ability to carry the ball from the back; he can be a decent left back option. Moreover, he can fill in as a right back as well when required. Therefore his versatility would be a massive plus for Gerrard.
Erik Durm
The World Cup winner with Germany is also available on a free transfer after his contract expired with relegated Huddersfield Town. The former Dortmund player is still 27, and he can be a decent bet for the Bears. The defender was touted heavily when he broke through in the professional scene, but his career has been on a downward trajectory for a while now. However, Durm is known for his impressive energy, and he can provide quality crosses by making overlapping runs down the left.
Max Lowe
The Derby County player has already been linked with Rangers and Celtic. The defender spent the last season on loan with Aberdeen and showed that he could hold his own in the Scottish Premiership. Lowe was impressive in his defensive work and also while attacking down the left.
Derby County’s managerial situation is unclear for the next season and Rangers might have to wait in the transfer market if they want to sign Lowe. We think that he can be a handy signing and if Rangers can get him even on loan then they should go ahead with it.
