Rangers have a big season ahead as they look to stop Celtic’s domination in Scottish football. Steven Gerrard’s appointment last season definitely brought a fresh air at the club, and there is a lot of optimism around him for the upcoming campaign.
With Rangers also securing some top buys in the transfer market, we are going to have an exciting season ahead. Celtic too need to dive in the transfer market to rebuild their squad after a host of departures this summer. Therefore that has presented Rangers an opportunity to level the playing field, in terms of quality of players.
With Gerrard being such a big name in the English football circuit, and after a reasonable one year at Rangers, he was being linked (Mirror) with a move to Newcastle United recently. The Magpies parted ways with Rafael Benitez, and it was reported that Mike Ashley saw the former England captain as a possible replacement.
Gerrard denies Newcastle link
However, there is nothing to worry about for the Rangers fan as Gerrard has rejected the chance to move to the Premier League. Recently, the boss was even questioned about the links with a return to England with Newcastle United to which Gerrard replied in Donald Trump fashion. He said (Daily Record), ”Fake news. Not that I’m aware of.”
Gerrard’s impact at Rangers
It was never in doubt that Gerrard would pull off a Rodgers here as Rangers had already started planning for the next season and Gerrard seems committed to the job he has at hand. Moreover, he was a player who was known for his loyalty during his Liverpool days as quite a few top clubs wanted to lure him away from the Merseyside, but the English midfielder stayed put even though Liverpool were struggling in the League table.
Gerrard is still a rookie manager, but his presence has helped Rangers to acquire some top players in the transfer market. Joe Aribo reportedly moved to Ibrox as he was desperate to play under the former Liverpool captain. With Premier League clubs and even Celtic interested in the former Charlton man, this was a massive win for the Gers in the transfer market.
Moreover, his connection with Liverpool has also helped them land quite a few players from the Merseyside. On the field, they might have fallen short last season, but there is enough indication that this side can go toe to toe with Celtic. All that is now left for the manager is to deliver the trophies this season. Last season was a learning experience for the boss, but hopefully, he can provide something tangible in the upcoming campaign.
