Italian outlet Leggo are linking Everton with a move for AS Roma midfielder Steven N’Zonzi. It is believed that the Toffees, along with French outfit Marseille, are interested in the services of the Frenchman, who did enjoy an eventful 2018/19 campaign with Roma. However, neither of those sides have yet submitted an official bid for the midfielder, whose current contract at Stadio Olimpico expires in 2022.
N’Zonzi’s club career so far
N’Zonzi first made waves in the market when he moved to Sevilla in an €8 million move from Stoke City back in 2015. After being a bit-part player in his debut campaign in La Liga, the Frenchman became a vital part of the Sevilla midfield, featuring in over 3,000 minutes of league football in the following campaign.
N’Zonzi’s importance in the first-team took a slight hit during the 2017/18 campaign, although he still ended up making 27 league appearances, 26 of which were starts. But, he was ultimately shipped out to AS Roma after the end of that corresponding campaign for a hefty €26 million.
The former Premier League star became a first-team regular in the holding midfield role for the Giallorossi. He built a formidable partnership with Bryan Cristante at the base of Roma’s formation. But, with the Italian giants failing to secure Champions League football next season, they will be keen on cutting down on wages. Hence, the potential departure of N’Zonzi may not be surprising at all.
What can N’Zonzi bring to the table?
A defensive midfielder by trade, N’Zonzi is primarily known for the physical presence he offers in the middle of the park. He boasts a massive 1.96m frame that not only gives him a considerable advantage when it comes to aerial duels but also makes him an intimidating figure for the opposing midfielder.
The Frenchman is good at reading the game while his tackling prowess helps him provide extensive defensive cover for the backline. Additionally, the ex-Stoke City star is also an excellent passer and is capable of distributing the ball throughout the pitch.
Why signing N’Zonzi could be a masterstroke by Marco Silva?
Everton have been massively boosted by the return of Andre Gomes this summer. But, they still lack depth in midfield, especially with Morgan Schneiderlin facing an uncertain future at the club. Hence, the addition of N’Zonzi could make sense.
The 30-year-old could provide stability to an Everton midfield unit that has flourished under the influence of Idrissa Gueye and Gomes. Besides, it is his previous exposure in the Premier League, coupled with his robust style of play that could help him quickly integrate to the fast-paced nature of English football. Hence, N’Zonzi could be an ideal signing for the Toffees as they aim to return among the English elites next season.
