According to Calciomercato, Everton are among the clubs linked with a move for Genoa defender Davide Biraschi. The 25-year-old has become a subject of significant transfer interest after an impressive campaign and is reportedly courted by Atalanta, who have identified him as an ideal alternative for Gianluca Mancini.
Additionally, the Toffees could also face competition from league rivals Newcastle United in the pursuit of this highly rated defender this summer.
Birashi’s excellent season at Genoa
Birashi initially moved to Genoa in a €1.6 million move from Avelino back in 2016. And following a slow start to his career at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris, he has gradually become a vital part of the Rossoblu defence. In fact, he was an ever-present figure in the Genoa backline last season, making 34 appearances in the league.
The Italian built a formidable defensive partnership with Cristian Romero, helping Genoa somehow evade the wrath of relegation. They finished 17th in the league table with 38 points, drawing with relegated Empoli. And had it not been for their superior defensive record (they conceded 57 goals compared to Empoli’s 70), Genoa would have been easily relegated to Serie B next season.
What can Birashi bring to the table?
Biraschi has impressed the onlookers with his composure on the ball. He can remain calm under pressure, although he does need to improve on his passing accuracy. That being said, the 25-year-old is a smart operator on the pitch and is capable of reading the game. He is also a disciplined tackler, having attained a tackle success rate of 77% last season.
Should Everton make a move for Birashi?
Everton are in dire need of defensive reinforcements, especially after the departure of veteran Phil Jagielka. The ageing defender returned to Sheffield United, which, in turn, has left a huge void in the backline. Besides, last summer’s star recruit Yerry Mina has stuttered in his debut campaign in the Premier League and should the Colombian fail to step up his game next season; the Toffees could be in deep trouble.
Biraschi, in that regard, could be a welcome addition for Marco Silva. But, Kurt Zouma should definitely remain his number one defensive target this summer, especially considering his promising spell on loan at Goodison Park last season.
However, should they fail to sign the Frenchman, Biraschi appears as a viable option for the Merseyside giants as they aim to bolster their defensive options.
