As reported by North Wales Live, Newcastle United have joined the race to sign Everton transfer target Allan Saint-Maximin. The OGC Nice winger has attracted a host of interest from all across Europe following a promising campaign in the Ligue 1 last term. He is tipped for a move away from Nice, who have set a €25 million price-tag for their star attacker this summer.
Saint-Maximin’s success at Nice
After struggling to make a breakthrough at Monaco, Saint-Maximin initially joined OGC Nice in 2017, for a fee of just €10 million. He has since become a prominent part of the Aiglons attack, notably featuring in 30 league matches in his debut campaign. The winger was involved in ten goals during that corresponding season.
Saint-Maximin performed equally well last season, scoring six goals and providing five assists in 34 Ligue 1 outings. He was one of the few bright spots in an otherwise dire Nice attack that saw them score only 30 goals last season. Only the relegated SM Caen and Guingamp managed fewer.
What can the Frenchman bring to the table?
A right-winger by trade, Saint-Maximin’s style of play revolves around his ability to get past defenders. Indeed, the 22-year-old is equipped with quick-feet that allows him to become unpredictable when facing the opponent. He had, in fact, completed 143 successful dribbles last term – highest in the league by a considerable margin.
Aside from his dribbling prowess, the ex-Hannover star likes to thread incisive passes in and around the final third. He averaged 1.7 key passes per game last season. But more importantly, he can provide the dynamism and pace that becomes useful on the counter.

Is Saint-Maximin a good option for Everton?
Saint-Maximin’s style of play may appear a bit too flashy in a physically demanding nature of the Premier League. His one-dimensional gameplay was evident during his short stint in the Bundesliga, and it’s unlikely he will be able to thrive in English football.
Hence, the 22-year-old could be a risky option for the Toffees, and Newcastle’s renewed interest could serve as a blessing in disguise. Everton, meanwhile, should turn their attention towards a more experienced and direct winger, who will be capable of replacing Ademola Lookman. The England youngster is reportedly edging closer to a return to Bundesliga after failing to make a breakthrough at the Goodison Park.
