According to the latest reports from the Chronicle, Celtic are said to have a ‘solid interest’ for Newcastle United’s goalkeeper Freddie Woodman. Arsenal are also said to be interested in him as the player is looking to being loaned out by the end of the transfer window.
Karl Darlow and Martin Dubravka are the other options the English club has, and that is the reason why Woodman has struggled for game time. Speaking about his future earlier, the u-20 World Cup winner said, ”It’s difficult for me to say. I’ve got a year left on my contract. It’s an awkward situation. I just want to keep getting games and minutes and learn as much as I can.”
Why are Celtic after a goalkeeper?
Scott Bain has replaced Craig Gordon as the no.1 in goal. Gordon is already in the final year of his contract and is going to be 37 in a few months. It is highly unlikely now that there would be an extension offered to the Scotland international so Celtic moving in for Woodman makes sense. The Englishman is still 22 and is seen as a significant talent. However, he needs to move away from Newcastle United to get regular game time.
Woodman’s rise to fame
The English custodian’s claim to fame happened when he won the golden glove in the u-20 World Cup which England won. Woodman played a massive role in the final as he saved a late penalty against Venezuela when the Three Lions were just 1-0 up, and they managed to keep hold of that lead and win the World Cup.
The Englishman is known for his sharp reflexes and distribution abilities. There is no doubt to us that he would be a top signing for the club and will provide real competition to Scott Bain in goal.
What should be Lennon’s play?
Hopefully, Celtic will try to get him permanently in the summer instead of bringing him on loan. The custodian is already in the final year of his contract, and he shouldn’t cost a bomb to land in this window. Some Championship clubs are also said to be interested in him.
However, Celtic can offer the youngster a chance to play in the Champions League which should be a big deal for such a young goalkeeper. This is not the first time that Celtic have been linked with the 22-year-old. The Hoops should look to get a deal done for this talented shot-stopper.
