According to the latest reports from Examiner Live, Celtic have a significant interest in Huddersfield Town’s right back Tommy Smith. Some reports from the same media outlet mention that the Hoops are ready to open up talks with the English club. Sources say that the defender could cost somewhere around the £3m mark.
Tommy Smith has been a fan favourite with the Terriers as he has played a crucial role in getting them to the Premier League. The fullback has the experience of playing in over 140 games in the Championship where he has managed to provide 17 assists as well.
Celtic have already made inroads in the transfer market as they have secured the likes of Christopher Julien, Luca Connell and Boli Bolingoli-Mbombo. A right back should definitely be on the agenda of the club next.
Why are Celtic after a right back?
It is no surprise to see the Bhoys trying to step up their pursuit for a right-back this summer. The club recently parted ways with the likes of Cristian Gamboa, Mikael Lustig and Jeremy Toljan. All three have been playing as right backs and thus Lennon is in dire need of adding options in that position. Lustig, who was a regular in that position for the last few years, was allowed to leave on a free transfer as his career was on a downward trajectory.
As of now, 20-year-old Anthony Ralston is the only option available at the club who can play as a right back. The Scotsman is still in the nascent stage of his career as he has only made just eight appearances in the Scottish Premiership.
Will Smith solve Lennon’s right back woes?
The 27-year-old might not be an eye-catching signing, but he will be a steady and reliable option for the Hoops in the right side of the defence. Smith has gained some valuable experience by playing in the Premier League and so that should come in handy for the Bhoys.
Smith is more of a defensive minded fullback who would keep it tight at the back. He uses his acceleration to good effect while going forward and he can put in some impressive crosses from the flanks. His energy and physicality would make him a decent candidate to start at Celtic Park.
It is believed that Huddersfield may be tempted to sell the fullback in this window. We think the player should jump at the opportunity of playing for Celtic as he can play in some top European competitions.
