According to the latest reports from the Express, Celtic are in a race with West Ham United and Sheffield United to sign former Arsenal and Man City striker Emmanuel Adebayor. The 35-year-old striker reportedly wants a move to London, and that could turn out to be an advantage for West Ham.
Adebayor is currently a free agent after his contract with Istanbul Basaksehir was terminated not too long ago. The Togo international enjoyed great success with Arsenal and had relatively fruitful spells with the likes of Tottenham and Manchester City.
At his best, Adebayor was a genuine goalscorer, and he had the ability and strength to thrive in the Premier League. However, he has always been a controversial figure both on and off the pitch and Celtic would definitely bring some drama at the club if they go on to sign him.
Does Celtic need a centre forward?
A lot will be resting on Odsonne Edouard’s shoulders if Lennon doesn’t manage to bring in a new striker in the ongoing transfer market. Leigh Griffiths made a goal-scoring return recently, but it remains to be seen how he would go about his business when he plays as the lone striker upfront.
Moreover, Edouard might miss a handful of games due to his injury track record, and the club should look to make a move for a new striker. Vakoun Issouf Bayo is also a strike option; a signing which Celtic made in January this year. However, he hasn’t even been involved in matchday squads when he was fit. That suggests that he might be some way off from playing first-team football.
Celtic depended on Timothy Weah and Oliver Burke last season in the second half of the campaign, and they should look to bring in more options after their departure this summer.
Is Adebayor the right option for Celtic?
It would be bizarre if Celtic ends up signing the 35-year-old. The Bhoys should look to keep away from this move. Moreover, Adebayor is also likely to demand huge wages. The forward started just eight games in the Turkish league last season and made 24 appearances in all competitions. The veteran managed four goals, but Celtic will be signing too big a disruptive force for the team.
Lennon should look to bring in a player who would be hungry to prove his worth at this level and not someone who would look to collect the last few paycheques of his playing career.
