In a Q&A with Bleacher Report yesterday (via Football.London), Atletico Madrid’s new summer signing Joao Felix admitted his fondness for Tottenham Hotspur when he said, “Me, to Spurs?” [Right] now that is impossible, but I do not know, one day.”
Felix’s Incredible Rise In European Football
The Viseu-born rising star had previously played for clubs such as Dragon Force and FC Porto before his career-defining move to Benfica in the summer of 2015. Felix worked his way up the Portuguese outfit’s youth ranks and finally managed to break out as a first-team starter in the previous campaign.
The Portuguese starlet enjoyed the best year of his playing career last season when he put in a series of goal-scoring displays for Benfica in the Liga NOS. The 19-year-old appeared in 43 matches for Bruno Lage’s team in the previous term, scoring 23 times while providing 11 assists on all fronts. His incredible contributions did not go unnoticed as Atletico Madrid decided to bring him to the Spanish capital earlier this summer.
Felix has also established himself as a crucial member of Portugal’s Under-21 side having featured in ten international matches while registering four goals for them thus far. He has also earned one international cap for the Portuguese national team but is yet to open his goal-scoring account for his country.
What Makes Felix Such An Exceptional Young Talent?
Felix’s stellar record last season made him one of the hottest commodities in European football. He is versatile enough to operate as a secondary striker or play in the number 10 position if needed. He also has decent pace under his belt, which makes him a potent option on the left-wing.
The La Liga whizkid can dribble with the ball at top speed without losing possession and can create openings for himself or others around him. Felix is an unforgiving finisher inside the opposing penalty box. However, there are still some questions over whether he would be able to continue scoring goals so frequently when he faces off against tougher opponents in the Spanish top-flight next season.
Should Tottenham Make A Move For Him In The Future?
Mauricio Pochettino would be wise to keep tabs on Felix’s performances at the Wanda Metropolitano in the coming years. If the Portuguese teenager can continue his stellar goal-scoring form next season, then Spurs would be foolish not to try and poach him next summer. Now that the Atletico Madrid new boy has revealed his admiration for Spurs, it makes a lot of sense for Pochettino to keep him on his mind for the future.
