According to Takvim, as cited by Daily Star, Turkish Superlig side Kasimpasa have accepted Aston Villa’s €11 million bid for Trezeguet. It is believed that Villa boss Dean Smith scouted the Egyptian international during the African Cup of Nations and holds him in high esteem. As a result, he is keen to secure the services of the winger this summer, and the report claims that the deal could soon be finalised.
Trezeguet’s success in recent years
Mahmoud Ahmed Ibrahim Hassan, commonly known as Trezeguet, started his career in Europe at RSC Anderlecht. But, he struggled to make an impact in the first-team for the Belgian giants, making only 11 competitive appearances.
However, his loan move to Kasimpasa in 2017 turned out to be the turning point of his career. The Egyptian international scored 13 goals in his debut campaign in the Turkish Superlig. As a result, his loan move was made permanent by Kasimpasa last summer for a fee of €2 million.
And Trezeguet repaid that faith by scoring nine goals and providing nine assists last season, helping the club from Istanbul finish 14th in the league table.
The winger also became a vital part of the Egyptian attack and was heavily involved in the AFCON this summer, notably scoring the winner in the opener against Zimbabwe. However, he failed to guide his nation past the Round of 16 stages, losing 1-0 to South Africa.
Why Trezeguet could be a massive coup for Aston Villa
Aston Villa have already reinforced their attacking department with the addition of Wesley, Jota and Anwar El Ghazi. And the acquisition of Trezeguet could further strengthen their attacking department as they look to impress upon their return to the Premier League.
The Kasimpasa winger is not the most successful players on the club level but has extensive experience on the international circuit, having won 41 caps for Egypt.
Tactically, Trezeguet could offer pace and dynamism in the final third that could aid the Villans in terms of counter-attacks. His quick-feet and willingness to take on defenders will also make them much more dangerous when probing the opposition.
But he is a gamble as well
Trezeguet is undoubtedly one of the most talented African wingers. But, his failures at Anderlecht coupled with his lack of experience in any of Europe’s top five league raises doubts over his capability of replicating those performances in the Premier League next season.
He could potentially struggle to cope with the physically demanding and fast-paced nature of the English top flight, thus making him a huge gamble for Aston Villa. But, it’s a gamble that Dean Smith should take in our opinion.
