According to Football.London, Tottenham Hotspur are not in the running to sign Kalvin Phillips. The Leeds United midfielder has been linked with a move to North London this summer, but the report claims that the Lilywhites are not looking to secure his services. And this could serve as a massive boost for Aston Villa, who have definite interest on Phillips this summer.
Kalvin Phillips was one of Championships’s best midfielders last season
Phillips has been a first-team regular for Leeds United since his promotion to the first team back in 2015. He has made nearly 150 competitive appearances for the Whites. But, it was his performances in the recently concluded 2018/19 campaign that made him one of the most sought-after midfielders in the English second division this summer.
Much like any of the last three seasons, Phillips was an ever-present figure in the Leeds midfield, making 42 league appearances. But, he offered balance to the side by sitting in the holding midfield role and providing excellent cover for the backline.
The 23-year-old also showcased his versatility by featuring in as a centre-back during a large chunk of the second half of the campaign when the club endured an injury crisis in the defensive department. And it was Phillips’ industry and work-ethic that helped Leeds reach the semi-final of the Championship promotion play0ff, thereby attracting the interest of Aston Villa.
What can Phillips bring to the table?
Phillips is a competent holding midfielder, who can not only offer protection for the backline but is also willing to win back possession for his team with strong tackles. He can provide energy and tenacity in the middle of the park, which, coupled with his versatility, has made the 23-year-old one of the most talented midfielders in the Championship.
Why Dean Smith must sign Phillips
Aston Villa, despite their spending spree this summer, are yet to sign a proper central midfielder, who can provide stiff competition to the likes of Conor Hourihane and John McGinn next season. Phillips, in that regard, could be an ideal signing.
The Leeds United midfielder, as discussed earlier, can protect the backline while his aggression and work-ethic bodes well for an Aston Villa side that will have to work hard if they are to retain their Premier League status next season. Therefore, the newly promoted outfit should double their efforts in their pursuit of Phillips this summer.
