According to Sport, Arsenal are among the clubs linked with a move for Marcelo. The report claims that the Brazilian international is keen to leave the Santiago Bernabeu after falling out of favour for the first time in 12 years. And the Gunners are ready to make a move for the experienced left-back this summer, although they could face stiff competition from PSG, AC Milan and Juventus.
Marcelo’s recent struggles at Real Madrid
Marcelo is one of the longest-serving players in the current Real Madrid setup. Having joined the club way back in 2007, the Brazilian has almost made 500 appearances across all competitions for Los Blancos and is considered as one of the best left-backs in the world.
However, the 31-year-old has lately struggled to keep up his consistency, primarily due to injuries. A recurring muscle injury has minimised his overall game-time at the Bernabeu, with the defender featuring in only 1854 minutes of league football in the recently concluded 2018/19 campaign.
Barring his debut campaign with Real Madrid, it was also the least productive season for Marcelo throughout his professional career as he was involved in only three goals. With the Spanish giants signing Ferland Mendy this summer, Marcelo might be feeling that his time at the Bernabeu is up. And therefore, a move away from the capital could be on the horizon, with a host of top clubs across Europe interested in his services.
Assessing Marcelo’s potential destination next season
Arsenal are among the clubs keen on signing Marcelo this summer. But, it is doubtful whether the Gunners will be able to afford his lucrative wages as well as the transfer fee. Besides, it’s unlikely the Brazilian will want to move to a club, without having the assurance of playing in the Champions League.
AC Milan, too, have failed to secure the Champions League qualification and were also excluded from the UEFA Europa League next season. That means San Siro is also an unlikely destination for Marcelo, making PSG and Juventus huge favourites.
Juventus, do hold the upper hand due to the player’s close relationship with star player Cristiano Ronaldo. As for Arsenal, it would perhaps be wiser for them to shift their interest to a more younger alternative, who has room to improve and won’t demand lucrative wages.
Kieran Tierney, for one, could be an excellent option but it remains to be seen whether or not they will be able to secure his services this summer.
