Leeds United are in the market to sign three wingers in the summer, and one of the players who have been linked so far is Helder Costa of Wolves. The Whites are looking to sign him on loan as they are unlikely to afford him as he would cost a lot. The winger failed to get regular game time in the Premier League as the newly promoted side reinforced their squad massively in the summer of 2018. The Portuguese international managed to start 16 games in the Premier League.
Therefore Leeds United might think that they have a good shot of landing Costa on loan and the player recently gave a small and subtle hint that he might be on the move to Elland Road. Costa reportedly followed Leeds United on Instagram.
That might not be a big hint, but the only other football team which he follows is his current club Wolves and Monaco, where he had a brief loan spell. Therefore Costa doesn’t seem like someone who randomly follows every other team, and this could be an indication that he might be on the move to Yorkshire.
Why Leeds United desperately need a winger?
The Whites have been after a winger since January, but they missed out on Daniel James. Bielsa used Ezgjan Alioksi and Jack Harrison down the left flank last season, and Pablo Hernandez usually played down the right. Alioski and Harrison were both below par in their performances, and the duo only seems good enough to be backup options at the moment.
Pablo Hernandez was one of the standout players for the Whites, but he might be better suited to play as an attacking midfielder as he usually drifted inside while playing from the right. He doesn’t have the pace anymore to run the defenders ragged. Therefore the whites should look to add options on both the flanks.
Why will Costa be a huge addition to Bielsa’s squad?
The 25-year-old is predominantly a right winger, but he is well adept at playing on both the flanks. The winger played a crucial role in getting Wolves to the Premier League as he contributed with five goals and six assists in 36 Championship appearances in the 2017-18 campaign.
Costa is known to have a terrific burst of speed, and when running at full tilt, defenders would find him hard to stop as he is physically strong as well on the ball. The Portuguese is also known to be a hard worker off the ball, and that should suit Bielsa with his pressing style. With a decent amount of Championship experience under his belt, the Whites would be getting a proven player at this level.
