Rangers will look to come up with a better challenge for the title after succumbing to Celtic once again. The Gers were in the Premiership race until January, but they faded as the season went into its crucial phase. Nobody really expected Gerrard to perform miracles in his first season, but the upcoming one could make or break his managerial career.
Which player should Gerrard concentrate on?
One area where the Bears need to reinforce is the centre back position. They have been linked with some targets, but no signings have been acquired just yet. One player with whom they were reportedly linked (Football Scotland) with not too long ago is Tomas Kalas. Rangers had apparently made a bid for the Czech defender, but no further stories came out on what transpired after that.
We think that this is one target Gerrard should concentrate on bringing to Ibrox. The Gers will have to fight off interest from Bristol City who had the Czech defender on loan in the last season where he made 41 appearances for them.
Kalas had joined Chelsea in 2010 and has only managed to make four appearances for them in the Premier League. The defender has had loan spells at six different clubs since then. Eredivisie outfit Feyenoord are also said to be interested in him.
Why will Kalas be an ideal signing for Gerrard?
The 18 times Czech international is 26 and is currently at the peak of his career right now. He has the right amount of experience, and he still has plenty of years left in him. We think that Rangers should look to bring in an experienced defender to prepare for the next season. Nikola Katic has shown promising signs, but he still needs some time to develop. Goldson has also looked good, but he made some costly errors lasts season, primarily because of lack of communication and poor judgement.
Kalas has the ability and the physical prowess to thrive in the Scottish Premiership. He seems like a natural defender while reading the game and he can form a formidable partnership at the back with Goldson. Kalas can even fill as a right back when required as he has played there in the past. Therefore his versatility will also be a significant asset to Gerrard.
How much should Gerrard look to pay?
The defender still has two years left on his contract, so Chelsea will probably demand a sizeable fee. However, if the defender is made available within £5-6m odd, then Rangers should try everything in their means to pull off this signing.
