According to a recent report by the Liverpool Echo, Liverpool are not interested in securing the signature of Real Betis defender Junior Firpo during this summer transfer period. The Daily Mirror had earlier reported that the Reds were facing stiff competition from Real Madrid in pursuit of the La Liga prospect, but the Echo has now revealed that Jurgen Klopp has no interest in recruiting the Spaniard this summer.
Firpo’s Rollercoaster Campaign At Real Betis Last Season
Firpo had to deal with some hamstring problems towards the latter stages of last season. However, he still managed to perform well on the pitch, which has raised his stock in the European transfer market.
The 22-year-old had featured in 29 matches for the Spanish side in the previous campaign, finding the back of the net three times while creating five assists across all competitions. On the defensive end, Firpo made an average of 1.6 tackles, 1.0 interceptions and 1.4 clearances per match in the last term (Stats via Whoscored).
What Does The Spanish Defensive Offer On The Field?
The Betis sensation has enough pace in his locker to complete some lung-bursting dribbles down the left wing. He is also defensively sound inside his own half as he hardly gets beat in 1v1 scenarios.
Firpo has also started to contribute by scoring or assisting a few goals in the opposition half last season. The Spaniard has all the skillset to give Andrew Robertson a run for his money for a place in the Reds’ first-team.
However, the Betis defender has to prove his worth in the Premier League before he can be compared to Robertson, who won the UEFA Champions League with Liverpool earlier this summer.
Why The Reds Should Recruit Firpo
With Alberto Moreno gone, the Merseyside outfit would need to bring in a capable back-up for Robertson, so Firpo fits the bill perfectly. He will not only be a fantastic alternative to Robertson but will also provide more competition for the Scottish captain in the upcoming campaign.
Thus, ignoring a quality full-back like Firpo could come back to haunt Liverpool if they fail to compete on all fronts next season.
