Jose Mourinho’s name has popped up all of a sudden to take over at Newcastle United as their next manager. Latest reports from the Chronicle mentions that if Bin Zayed Group can take over at the club, then Mourinho is being eyed as a potential replacement for Rafael Benitez.
Benitez’s contract saga has taken a backseat, but we feel that he is still the favourite to continue at St. James’ park even after the big money takeover. However, the appointment of Mourinho would definitely showcase the ambition of the new owners. That would suggest that they are not willing to mess around at the club and wants instant success as the Portuguese manager is a serial winner.
Mourinho’s stock might have dived down a bit after he was shown the door from Manchester United, but it was clear that he had lost the dressing room and the players were unwilling to give their hundred percent for the team. So one can sympathise with the two times Champions league winning manager for that.
What did Mourinho say?
Mourinho recently talked about going into football management again and said, ”I want to be happy, not necessarily win, I want to be happy, and I don’t want to accept a proposal without being convinced of it, that’s what I’ve always thought, that’s why if they told me ‘today there are no conditions to win, but we want you to create the conditions to win’, then I would evaluate it. So I’m absolutely calm because I know that if it doesn’t happen now, it will happen later. If I don’t have what makes me happy, I don’t go. I think I earned the right to think like this “
Mourinho is clearly indicating that he will instead go at a club where he will be given the time to work his magic instead of a club looking at instant success. Newcastle United could have a big summer ahead, and they can emerge as a new entrant in the Premier League heavyweights.
Will Mourinho be a better bet than Benitez?
The Portuguese could arguably be a better man to see over Newcastle United into the new era, but we cannot look beyond the fact that how unfair it would be for Benitez if he was not given a full chance to continue as their manager. The Spaniard stuck with the Magpies when they went down to the Championship and helped them get back up to the Premier League straight away. Not many managers with Champions League and La Liga titles under their belt would have accepted that downgrade of managing in the English second tier.
The former Liverpool manager deserves all credit for establishing the Toon as a steady Premier Lague club with limited financial backing, and we believed that he should be given the responsibility to continue as the manager even if the new owners come in.
