As reported by SportBild, Julian Draxler has dismissed rumours linking him to a move away from Paris Saint-Germain this summer. “I can not say anything about that, because I have no intention of leaving the club!” – told Draxler when asked about a potential move away from Parc des Princes this summer.
This could serve as a massive blow for Tottenham Hotspur, who were offered the opportunity to sign the German international for just £35 million.
Draxler’s mixed spell at PSG
Draxler arrived at PSG back in 2017 in a £32 million move from VfL Wolfsburg. But, he hasn’t exactly managed to make himself a key component for the Parisien as of yet.
The playmaker featured in 31 league matches under Thomas Tuchel during the 2018/19 campaign. However, about 22 of those were starts and even when he started the game, he was often seen getting subbed off during the latter stages of the game. As a result, Draxler’s overall game-time was minimised to just over 2,000 minutes of league football.
That being said, Draxler has been quite productive, having been involved in 11 goals. And that made him the fifth most productive player for PSG this past season, helping them secure yet another Ligue 1 title.
Julian Draxler: player profile
As far as gameplay is concerned, Draxler is an attacking midfielder, who likes to take on defenders and create chances in the final third. He averaged 1.4 successful per game during the 2018/19 campaign, which is quite impressive.
The 25-year-old is an excellent ball-carrier, mainly due to his composure and remarkable footwork. And this allows him to track back and pick up balls from central midfield and operate in the half-spaces. His immaculate vision then enables him to pick useful passes in and around the final third. Hence, it comes as no surprise that the German has averaged 1.3 key passes per game this past season.
However, what makes Draxler such a sought-after player in Europe is his versatility. Indeed, the ex-Schalke prodigy can feature in wide attacking positions as well as his preferred attacking midfield role. He can also operate in central midfield if needed.
Why Draxler would have been an excellent signing for Tottenham
Draxler could have been an ideal replacement for Christian Eriksen amid reports linking the Dane to a move to Real Madrid this summer. And his potential departure could leave a large hole in Tottenham’s creative department, especially with Dele Alli and Erik Lamela struggling with injuries this past season.
Draxler, to that end, could have provided Mauricio Pochettino with an additional option in the number ten position. Besides, his ability to feature as a wide-attacker would have also proved useful, especially in such a long and strenuous schedule of English football.
