According to a recent report by Estadio Deportivo, Tottenham Hotspur are interested in securing the signature of Rennes midfielder Benjamin Bourigeaud during this ongoing summer transfer period. However, the same source has also claimed that Spurs will face some intense competition from a whole host of clubs which include Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United in pursuit of the Ligue 1 talent in this off-season.
The Recent Emergence Of Benjamin Bourigeaud
The 25-year-old had enjoyed a fruitful season with Rennes as he helped them secure an impressive tenth place finish in the Ligue 1 standings in the last campaign. He was instrumental in helping the French club win enough matches to avoid relegation to the Ligue 2. His match-winning performances from the previous season have raised his stock in European football so it shouldn’t be a surprise to hear about the growing competition for his signature this summer.
Bourigeaud made 52 appearances for Julien Stephan’s team last season, scoring nine goals while grabbing ten assists in all competitions. Even though he started his playing career at Lens, the French midfielder made a name for himself after his switch to Roazhon Park in the summer of 2017.
At 25, Bourigeaud is currently enjoying the peak years of his playing career which Spurs could look to benefit from over the new few seasons. The Calais born talent primarily operates as a box to box midfielder but is equally capable of filling in as a defensive midfielder or put in a shift down the right flank as a winger.
What Will The French Midfield Ace Bring To The New White Hart Lane?
He is a complete midfielder who can do a bit of everything at the centre of the park. However, that also means that Bourigeaud does not have any real strengths to his game other than being a great link up man in midfield. The French sensation can pass the ball accurately and is a potent goal-threat in the opposition half.
He has added goals and assists to his game last season which goes to show that he is increasing his productivity with each season. Spurs will do well to lure him away from Rennes as he will undoubtedly bolster Mauricio Pochettino’s midfield options ahead of the new season.
Is Bourigeaud The Right Choice For Pochettino?
Bourigeaud can also be an ideal replacement for Mousa Dembele who left the North London giants during the January transfer window. If Christian Eriksen also parts ways with Spurs this summer, then there is a real chance that Pochettino’s side will lack enough depth and quality in midfield, so the acquisition of Bourigeaud could soften that blow and help them compete for trophies next season.
