According to the latest reports from the Guardian, Fulham’s winger Ryan Sessegnon has rejected a chance to sign a new contract at the club as he prefers a move to Tottenham Hotspur. The 19-year-old has one year left on his deal, but his heart is set at leaving Craven Cottage to join Champions League runners up Tottenham Hotspur. French heavyweights PSG also have an interest in him along with Manchester United.
Spurs have been linked with the young Englishman for quite some time now and it no surprise that Sessegnon wants a move to the North London club. The winger set the Championship ablaze with his performance as Fulham were promoted to the Premier League last season. However, the Cottagers endured a tough season in the English top flight, and they are back in the Championship once again.
Sessegnon managed to grab two goals and six assists in 38 appearances last season and the winger wasn’t able to make the impact which was expected of him. However, the fact of the matter is that he is still 19, and there is a lot of room for improvement. There is no doubt that he would develop well if he decided to move to Spurs in the summer.
However, he is likely to struggle for game time at the North London club given the kind of talent they have at their disposal. Last season showed that Sessegnon might need some more time to perform at the Premier League level. Nevertheless, the experience of playing regularly last season would help him massively in the long run.
The English prodigy is still raw, and he needs some fine tunings to his game to thrive at this level. Sessegnon is also an England u-21 international.
Should Pochettino sign him?
Spurs have quite a few attacking players at their disposal, but Pochettino doesn’t have too many outright wingers. Lucas Moura and Son Heung-Min often play as a second striker in a more central role, and Pochettino should look to add someone like Sessegnon who will play like an outright winger. His blistering pace can leave quite a few Premier League defenders on their backside.
He shouldn’t be judged entirely on his season with Fulham as the London club struggled as a team and they lost 26 of their 38 games last season. Pochettino might have to be a bit patient with him, but the winger has immense potential, and he could be the player to watch for in 2-3 years. With the player also willing to move to North London, Spurs should sign Sessegnon up in the summer.
