Rangers have made positive strides in this transfer window as they have secured some crucial signings as of now. However, the transfer market isn’t only about signing new players but also about keeping hold of some of your best talents. Alfredo Morelos and James Tavernier had an influential campaign last season, and the duo has been linked (Evening Times) with a move away from the club.
The Bears depend heavily on their Colombian striker in the attacking third. Whereas Tavernier’s overlapping runs and crosses from the right are significant as well. His set piece taking ability and composure to score from the spot was often the difference maker last season.
Gerrard Gives Positive Update For Rangers Fans
Gerrard recently gave the positive update on this in-demand duo. The English manager revealed that he is yet to receive a bid for them even though there has been a lot of speculation around them. He said, ”They both had very good seasons. But there hasn’t been a single bid for either of those players, that’s the truth. There hasn’t been an offer for any of my players up until now. Do I have to sell to bring in? I don’t think so.”
”Am I confident of keeping Tav and Alfredo? It’s not a question I need to answer right now because there are no offers on the table. Am I expecting a bid? Possibly. So I’ll make a decision if and when a bid lands. Every player has a price. But if bids come in that are nowhere near acceptable, then the answer is going to be a straight no.”
Another positive update given by the manager was that he isn’t banking on departures to generate funds and make signings. He also revealed that he has certain targets ready if an eye-opening offer comes in for the star duo. Therefore the manager is under no pressure to sell to bring in new players and the owners have given him full backing so far.
Rangers though have done most of their signings on free transfers or minimal compensation fees. The only one where they really had to spend on for was George Edmundson. Apart from that, all have been very cost-effective signings.
Our take on Tavernier and Morelos’ chances of moving away from the club?
Rangers managed to get Morelos on a new contract not too long ago. We have been maintaining for a while that Morelos’ disciplinary problems could turn into a blessing in disguise for the club as the prospective buyers might not come in with a big bid and Gerrard might be able to eke out another year out of the eccentric striker.
Aston Villa are known to have an interest in Tavernier, and we think that they might launch a bid as this is still early days in the transfer window. They are reportedly likely to miss out on Luton Town fullback James Justin so the Villans might end up turning their attention towards Tavernier next.
