Recently reports had emerged that Rangers are in the race to sign Sunderland’s midfielder Dylan McGeouch. The former Celtic player had joined Sunderland in the summer of 2018, and according to the reports from the Chronicle, the midfielder is soon going to be out of a contract. He made 27 appearances for Celtic before he moved on to Hibernian FC.
It seems like Sunderland signed the 26-year-old on just a one year deal and Rangers can land the Scottish midfielder on a free transfer. Before joining the Black Cats, McGeouch was part of the Hibernian side where he was a crucial player for them.
The midfielder made 30 appearances for the English club last season in all competitions, and maybe Sunderland wants to cut down their squad size after they failed to earn promotion to the Championship. McGeouch played a bits and pieces role in midfield, and he never really managed to establish himself in the first eleven.
Do Rangers need a midfielder?
We feel that the Gers need to strengthen in certain areas of their squad, but midfield is one position where they are well covered. Gerrard secured the signing of Glen Kamara in January who has emerged as a top player since then. Steven Davis was signed on loan at the start of the year, and his deal has also been turned into a permanent one.
Apart from that, Gerrard has the likes of Ryan Jack, Ross McCrorie and Scott Arfield who are good first team options. The club is going to lose Lassana Coulibaly as his loan spell is set to expire and Graham Dorrans could also be shipped away after his struggle with injuries. Nevertheless, we feel that Rangers are well covered in midfield and McGeouch won’t be an upgrade over any of the players they have.
What should Gerrard do instead?
The Bears need to close the gap on their rivals Celtic, and they cannot achieve that by signing players who would not improve them much. They need to go after players who will make a significant difference to their side and signing a playmaker/ an attacking midfielder should be a priority for the club in the summer.
The Gers are already packed with central midfielders who can do a little bit of everything. Even though McGeouch is available on a free transfer and he has plenty of experience of playing in the Premiership, Gerrard should not look to sign the two times Scottish international.
