According to the latest reports from Glasgow Evening Times, Rangers look poised to sign Oldham Atheltic’s centre back George Edmundson. Rangers have reportedly made a £600,000 bid. Not too long ago, a similar bid was made by Portsmouth which was accepted by the club.
The way things have gone in this transfer race for the 21-year-old defender, we think that there could be further twists ahead and Rangers fan should wait a bit further before rejoicing. However, the likelihood of the defender joining Rangers seems high as reports earlier had mentioned that he prefers a move to the Scottish giants.
Even the latest reports from the Glasgow Evening Times mentions that the chance to play under Gerrard has been a significant influence on Edmundson’s decision. Rangers are reaping the rewards of having a marquee manager like Steven Gerrard in the transfer window. His connections with Liverpool have already helped them land various talented youngsters from the Merseyside, and now even some other English youngsters are keen to work under an icon like Gerrard.
Why Rangers need a defender?
It is no surprise to see Gerrard investing so much time and energy for a defender in the ongoing transfer window. The club had lost the services of Joe Worrall and Gareth McAuley as their contracts expired. That leaves the Gers with two centre-halves in the form of Connor Goldson and Nikola Katic.
Gerrard would probably want to sign a defender soon as Europa League qualifiers begin earlier than the League games and Rangers desperately need to add cover in defence.
Will Edmundson be a good signing?
The defender is currently in the final year of his contract and Oldham have tried to eke out every penny out of him. Edmundson was named in League Two’s team of the season even though his side finished 14th in the division. The English defender made 54 appearances for his side last season and was a major rock at the back.
Edmundson has that physical strength and robustness which is often necessary to thrive in the Scottish Premiership. He also showcases leadership abilities on the pitch, and he reads the dangers well before they can develop. The raw ingredients are definitely there in the 21-year-old. However, he is yet to be tested at a higher level. The pressure of playing at Rangers will be immense as the Gers are expected to win every match they play in. Therefore it remains to be seen whether he would be able to shine through at Ibrox.
