According to FSV Mainz midfielder Jean-Philippe Gbamin’s agent Bernard Collignon, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is a long-term admirer of his client’s talents (courtesy of the Daily Star). In a recent interview with Fussball Transfers (via the Daily Star), Gbamin’s agent said, “In January 2018 Klopp called Mainz and wanted to commit him as a centre-back, who also helps out in midfield.
“But Mainz did not want to let him go in the middle of the relegation battle. In the summer, Liverpool signed on to Fabinho.
” I had meetings with Liverpool, Tottenham, Arsenal, Everton and many other clubs.
“He is in the shortlist. However, not as a top candidate, because its exact position is unclear.
“In my opinion, he is a player worth 60 million euros. It’s time for him to play as a centre-back. There he would be a top player in all four major leagues and would make a great career.”
Gbamin’s Successful Spell In The German Top-Flight
The 23-year-old had featured in 33 matches for the Bundesliga outfit last season, scoring two goals while grabbing one assist in all competitions. More importantly, Gbamin had made 1.6 tackles, 1.0 interceptions and 0.9 clearances per game in the previous campaign (stats via Whoscored). He has also earned five international caps for Ivory Coast thus far.
What Does The Ivory Coast Talent Offer On The Pitch?
Gbamin has decent pace and is an accurate distributor of the ball at the centre of the park. He is a powerhouse who can protect the backline while sitting as a deep-lying holding midfielder. Furthermore, the Ivory Coast international can make some timely interceptions for his team, much like how Fabinho performs for Liverpool.
What makes Gbamin such an exceptional talent is his versatility to play in multiple roles inside his own half. The former Lens prospect is primarily a defensive midfielder who can also operate as a centre-back. Thus, he would have more depth to the Reds squad which could help Klopp’s team compete on all fronts next season.
Gbamin’s Addition: Wise Move For The Reds?
Liverpool have often been a subject of criticism for their dismal performances in the domestic cup competitions over the past few years. So the Merseyside outfit could use a player of Gbamin’s versatility and athleticism if they are to win more trophies under Klopp’s tutelage at Anfield.
