According to the latest reports from L’Equipe, Newcastle United are set to come up with a club record bid for Rennes’ star winger Ismaila Sarr. Rennes reportedly knocked a bid back worth £27m from an unknown club for their Senegalese talent. The report adds that Newcastle United are prepared to go over that bid to land the 21-year-old star.
Rafael Benitez is said to rate Sarr highly, and he thinks that he would be a great addition to the Tyneside outfit. However, the Magpies are in a bit of a muck right now as their ownership and managerial situation is still not sorted. As long as it is uncertain, the Toon might lose ground in the transfer market to bring in new players.
If there is no ownership change, then we don’t see Newcastle paying over £30m to land someone like Sarr. Therefore we think that this reported interest on the Senegalese might mean that the new owners are likely to take over from Mike Ashley.
Hopefully, from the club’s point of view, everything will be taken care of soon as Benitez is set to enter the final week of his contract and it would be a shambolic decision from the administration if they let the Spanish tactician leave after the work he has done at the club.
Newcastle United’s left wing options
Christian Atsu and Miguel Almiron played down the left along with Chelsea loanee Kenedy. Kenedy has returned to the London outfit. Almiron can play in a more central role, and he was highly effective previously as an attacking midfielder. Therefore if someone like Sarr comes in then, Almiron can be shifted to play in his preferred central role in the attacking third.
What will Sarr bring at St. James’ Park?
The 21-year-old is a left winger, and he enjoyed a fruitful season in the Ligue 1 last campaign. The winger managed an impressive haul of 13 goals and 11 assists in all competitions. At just a tender age, he has made over 20 appearances for the national team as well.
Sarr is known for his rapid burst of speed, and few wingers in Ligue 1 would be faster than him. The winger shot into limelight with his performances in the Europa League last season. In 9 games, he scored four goals and managed three assists which brought a lot of attention towards him. The winger has been likened to become the next Sadio Mane, and he would definitely be a top addition for Newcastle United.
