According to Express, Newcastle United have identified Kevin Trapp as their desired goalkeeping target this summer. The PSG star was excellent on loan to Eintracht Frankfurt this past season, but his long-term future at Paris remains uncertain. As a result, the Magpies are keen to make a move as they look to provide more competition to Martin Dubravka in goal next season.
Trapp’s revival at Eintracht Frankfurt
Trapp has had a difficult spell at PSG since joining the club back in 2015. Apart from his debut season, the German struggled with lack of game-time and was often overlooked by managers. He notably made only four appearances in Ligue 1 the season before last.
As a result, he was shipped out to his former club Eintracht Frankfurt on a season-long loan deal at the start of last summer. And it seems as if the 28-year-old is once again back to his best. Trapp played a critical role in Eintracht’s excellent campaign that saw them reach the semi-final of the UEFA Europa League.
Although the Eagles missed out on a top-four finish, Trapp made 33 appearances, during which he conceded 48 goals – fifth best defensive record in the league.
What can Trapp offer to the table?
Trapp is mainly known for his super quick reflexes. The 28-year-old made 111 saves during the 2018/19 campaign – fifth highest in the league. Seven of those saves have come from inside the six-yard box, which is an astonishing record for any goalkeeper.
The PSG ‘keeper is not afraid to come out of his line either, in order to neutralise any potential goalscoring opportunity for the opposition. And this makes him a precious commodity in the world of goalkeepers.
However, Trapp isn’t the most convincing when it comes to imposing his presence inside the box. During set-pieces, the German often looks tentative in claiming the ball and is prone to making an error.
Should Newcastle make a move for Trapp?
Newcastle United need reinforcements in the goalkeeping department. Dubravka is their only reliable option in between the sticks. And other options include Karl Darlow, who made just one appearance last season. As for Rob Elliot, he is already in the final phase of his career, at the age of 33.
Hence, Trapp would be an excellent addition to Newcastle United. He is a quality goalkeeper, hardened by years of experience in top-flight football. And the German could surely give Dubravka a run for his money in between the sticks for the Magpies next season.
