According to Talksport host Andy Goldstein, as reported by Daily Star, Manchester United have identified Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang as their desired replacement for Romelu Lukaku. The Belgian international has been linked with a move away from Old Trafford, with Inter Milan being a potential destination. As a result, the Red Devils are keen on making a move for the Arsenal forward.
“I’ve got someone on the inside, not at United by the way, someone on the inside who every so often would tell me transfer gossip. He has told me that United are interested in Aubameyang” – Goldstein said on Monday night.
Aubameyang’s success in the Premier League
Aubameyang has become one of Premier League’s most lethal attackers since joining Arsenal at the start of last year. The Gabonese international has made 65 appearances for the Gunners in all competitions and has recorded an excellent scoring tally, having netted 41 goals.
The ex-Dortmund star was one of the few bright spots in an otherwise mediocre campaign for Arsenal during the 2018/19 season. He plundered 22 goals in 36 matches, helping the North London giants finish fifth in the league table as they narrowly missed out on Champions League qualification.
Aubameyang also ended the campaign as the league’s joint top scorer along with Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane despite playing just 2,731 minutes of league football.
What can Aubameyang bring to the table?
Aubameyang is an opportunistic striker, whose excellent positioning sense allows him to be at the right place at the right time. He is a lethal finisher, which is rather evident if we look at his impressive scoring statistics. However, he does tend to miss opportunities to score, at times, though it is normal for any striker.
What makes Aubameyang such a unique component in attack is his pace. The Gabonese international is one of the fastest players in the Arsenal camp, and his electric speed allows him to provide a genuine threat on the counter. He is also a positive striker who rarely loses confidence in himself – a part of his personality that has helped him become one of the most lethal forwards in Europe.
Why Manchester United should go for Aubameyang
Ole-Gunnar Solskjaer is keen to build his team around young players to make Manchester United much more athletic and dynamic next season. Aubameyang, in that regard, would be an ideal replacement for the much-maligned Romelu Lukaku given his pace and dynamic nature of play in the final third.
Just this one addition could make Man United title contenders if they can get the Gabonese forward to Old Trafford and follow it up with the signing of a proper defensive ace.
The Arsenal superstar is sure to thrive alongside another pacy attacker in Marcus Rashford while his lethal finishing traits could add much more bite into the United attack. That being said, it’s unlikely the Gunners will let go of their prized asset to their direct rivals, especially at a time when it’s absolutely necessary to keep hold of their star players. But, in football, we never know, and it will be interesting to see if the Red Devils really make a move for the Gabonese international this summer.
