According to a recent report by La Dernière Heure (via Manchester Evening News), Manchester United are close to finalising a €25m deal to bring Paris Saint-Germain full-back Thomas Meunier to Old Trafford during the summer transfer period. The same source has revealed that the experienced defender is set to snub Arsenal and join the Red Devils in this offseason which will be a big boost for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as he prepares for a massive summer rebuild at Manchester over the next couple of months.
Meunier’s Impressive Season In The French Top-Flight
The Belgian defensive ace has enjoyed another productive season in French football after putting in some match-winning performances during the recently concluded Ligue 1 campaign.
Meunier had featured in 31 matches for PSG last season, registering five goals while creating seven assists in multiple competitions. More importantly, the ex-RE Virton right-back has made an average of 2.0 tackles, 0.8 interceptions and 1.0 clearances per game in the Ligue 1 (Stats taken from Whoscored).
The PSG defender is also vastly experienced at the international level after securing 36 caps for Belgium and scoring six goals in the process so far.
What Will The Belgian International Add To Solskjaer’s Team?
The former Club Brugge talent boasts decent pace and can make some lung-bursting dribbles down the right wing. He is also physically dominant and is a reliable defender inside his own half. Meunier is also one of the most productive fullbacks in the French top-flight as he can score and assist goals every week in the opposition half.
Will Meunier Be A Good Option For The Red Devils Next Season?
The addition of a right-back of Meunier’s quality and experience will undoubtedly bolster Solskjaer’s defensive options at the Theatre of Dreams. The Belgian defender will be an excellent fit at Old Trafford as he has shown in the past that he is not afraid to perform well on the pitch at the highest level.
However, there are still some question marks over whether Meunier will be able to cope with the physical toll of English football. Even though it might be a slight gamble, Man United should still try their best to get this deal over the line in the coming days.
