According to Mundo Deportivo, Manchester United have contacted FC Barcelona regarding the availability of Samuel Umtiti. The Red Devils are keen to sign a quality centre-back this summer and have reportedly set their sights on this French World Cup winner once again.
The report claims Barcelona have deemed Umtiti as “non-transferable” while it also coincides with their interest in Victor Lindelof, although United too are unlikely to sell the Swede after an impressive campaign.
But, Umtiti may have a reason to leave
Umtiti certainly wasn’t happy with the way Barcelona manager Ernesto Valverde treated him following the return of his knee injury. The Frenchman was often overlooked and eventually lost his place to Clement Lenglet in defence. And with the Catalans still interested in Matthijs de Ligt, he could potentially go down the pecking order in the Barcelona defence next season.
Hence, a move to the Premier League could make sense as it will provide him with the opportunity of getting regular game-time as well as the chance of showcasing his talent in arguably the most competitive league in the world.
What can Umtiti bring to the table?
Umtiti initially arrived from Olympique Lyonnais as a dogged defender but has now emerged as an excellent ball-playing centre-back, mostly thanks to Barcelona’s possession-based game. He has notably attained over 90% pass completion rate in each of his three seasons in Spain.
While the Frenchman’s passing game is restricted mainly to short vertical passes, he is capable of threading accurate balls in behind the defence. He can also move forward and pick out midfielders and attackers with his laser focussed passes in between the lines.
But, Umtiti’s game is not only restricted to passing as he is a competent defender as well. His physically imposing 182cm frame makes him an intimidating presence in the backline. The 25-year-old is also a strong tackler and is capable of making crucial interceptions.
Should Manchester United make a move for this Barcelona defender?
Umtiti’s vast experience at the highest level of football coupled with his leadership qualities could be beneficial for a Manchester United team that have lacked the presence of a bonafide leader at the back for quite some now. The Frenchman can also bring that winning mentality into the team and could be an excellent defensive partner for Lindelof.
The fact that both of these defenders are capable of passing out from the back would make United much stronger in their build-up game. And with Aaron Wan-Bissaka reportedly on the verge of moving to Old Trafford, Umtiti’s addition will further strengthen Ole-Gunnar Solskjaer’s new look Manchester United defence.
