According to The Sun, Manchester City are weighing up a move for SD Eibar goalkeeper Asier Riesgo this summer. It is believed that manager Pep Guardiola is keen to add someone experienced in the goalkeeping department and the veteran Spaniard is his desired target. Riesgo will be available for free after the expiry of his current contract with Eibar at the end of this month.
Riesgo is one of the most experienced Spanish goalkeepers
A product of the Real Sociedad youth academy, Riesgo was first promoted to the senior side way back in 2002. But, it wasn’t until the 2004/05 campaign that the Spaniard made his breakthrough into the Sociedad lineup, making 36 appearances.
Since then, the 35-year-old has had a topsy turvy spell with La Real, making 130 appearances in all competitions. His professional eight-year spell with the club also included two loan spells at SD Eibar and Recreativo Huelva before he was permanently shipped away to CA Osasuna in the summer of 2010.
Riesgo made only 35 starts for Osasuna before he made his return to SD Eibar five years later in 2015. And since then, the 35-year-old has become a bit part player for Los Almeros, featuring in 69 matches for them across all competitions.
Riesgo’s most recent campaign with Eibar
Riesgo was a second choice keeper for Eibar at the start of the campaign, starting behind Marko Dmitrovic. He later became the first-choice during the middle of the campaign and ended with 14 league appearances. But, that was before Dmitrovic once again got the nod ahead during the final phase of the season and ended the campaign with 24 appearances in La Liga.
Is Riesgo a good option for Manchester City?
Riesgo will undoubtedly be a smart addition to Manchester City given his experience and ability to lead from the back and boost the morale of the team. He has made over 180 appearances in La Liga, which will come in handy as the Sky Blues look to defend their Premier League title for the second time in a row.
The 35-year-old will be able to provide cover for the undisputed first-choice keeper Ederson as well as Claudio Bravo. The Chilean international is fit again but has struggled with injuries for most of his spell at Manchester City. And should he fall again, Riesgo is more than capable of filling up in his absence.
