According to a recent report by Mundo Deportivo, Manchester City have already got an agreement in place to bring SD Eibar goalkeeper Asier Riesgo to the Etihad Stadium during the ongoing transfer window. The same source has revealed that the Citizens are just hours away from completing the transfer as they look to recruit a good back-up for Ederson and Claudio Bravo next season.
The Spaniard’s arrival could also see the likes of Aro Muric and Daniel Grimshaw get some valuable game time out of loan next season.
Riesgo’s Long Career In Spanish Football
The experienced keeper has a wealth of experience in the La Liga after coming through the youth ranks of Real Sociedad early in his playing career.
He had a short spell at Eibar back in 2002 and was picked up by the same club when he was a free agent in the summer of 2015. The 35-year-old keeper had made 16 appearances for the Spanish outfit last season, conceding 24 goals while keeping four clean sheets in all competitions.
The Deba-born goalie is entering the twilight years of his career, so it is only fitting for him to join a club where he would have a chance to win trophies even when not being involved too much on the pitch. Man City are currently the Carabao Cup champions so Riesgo’s arrival could bolster their chances of retaining the crown next season.
What Does The Spanish Veteran Offer On The Field?
Riesgo can still handle the ball quite well and can make some last-ditch dives to stop the ball from going into the back of his net. However, father time is taking a toll on his game as he is struggling to keep up his high standards with each season.
Acquiring Riesgo: Good Move For The Citizens?
The Citizens would be acquiring a keeper well past his prime, but at the same time, they would also be adding an experienced campaigner who would know how to manage games better in the domestic cup competitions. However, he is nowhere near good enough to challenge Ederson for a permanent starting berth in Pep Guardiola’s first-team.
All in all, he would be a wise signing for Man City as they look to win a quadruple under Guardiola in the upcoming campaign.
