According to Telegraph, Leicester City are on the verge of securing their first signing of the summer in the shape of Luton Town defender James Justin. The youngster was due to have his medical at Leicester on Wednesday, and the move could soon be made official by the two clubs. The report claims that the Foxes will initially pay £6 million to Luton, but that fee could potentially rise to as much as £10 million after instalments.
James Justin’s success at Luton
Justin is regarded as one of the most promising defenders in League One, having emerged as a crucial part of the Luton backline ever since his promotion to the senior side back in 2016. During his three year spell with the first team, the defender has made 114 appearances for the Hatters across all competitions. But, it was the 2018/19 campaign, where the 21-year-old really made an impact.
Indeed, Justin was an ever-present figure in the Luton defence, featuring in 43 league matches during which he was involved in an impressive 11 goals. His service at the back was critical behind Luton’s promotion back to the Championship. And it seems like his performance didn’t go unnoticed with the defender set to complete a move to Premier League this summer.
What can Justin bring to the table?
By far, the most valuable asset of Justin’s game is his versatility. Despite being advertised as a left-back, the 21-year-old can feature on the opposite flank and even in the wide-midfield role, if needed. He is blessed with excellent technical prowess which helps him combine well with attackers and midfielders in the final third.
Additionally, the Luton Town star is an agile defender, who can not only provide extensive attacking support from the flanks but can also track back – making him a well-rounded fullback.
Is Justin a good option for Leicester City?
Leicester City star Ben Chilwell has continuously been linked with a big money move this summer. And though the England international is likely to stay Leicester next season, his long-term future at the club is doubtful. Justin, in that regard, could be an ideal replacement option for the Foxes.
Besides, the fact that the 21-year-old can also play at right-back means he can provide back-up for the likes of Ricardo Pereira and Daniel Amartey, as they struggled with injury for the most of the 2018/19 campaign.
Although Justin has no experience of playing in the top flight, he has shown that he is capable of playing at a higher level and with the ideal guidance, the youngster can be groomed into an excellent defender in the near future.
