According to a recent report by the Daily Mirror, Liverpool are set to face stiff competition from Real Madrid in pursuit of Real Betis defender Junior Firpo during the ongoing summer transfer window. In an interview with El Larguero (via the Daily Mirror), the Spanish left-back addressed speculation regarding his future and said, “Did Madrid call me? If you want to know, you can ask them.
“I’m here with the national team and that’s all I want to think about.”
However, the Dominican Republic-born defensive ace had hinted in an interview with Marca earlier this month that he would not be thinking about leaving Real Betis when he said, “I have said that Real Madrid was more attractive to me because my father is from Madrid.
“This has nothing to do with where I would rather play.
“Honestly, the team that is most interesting to me right now is Real Betis, where I have been since I was young.”
Firpo’s Incredible Season Despite Late Injury Struggles
Firpo had to endure some hamstring problems towards the latter stages of the previous campaign. However, he still managed to put in some impressive displays for Betis, which would justify why so many elite clubs have been looking to secure his services in this offseason.
The 22-year-old had featured in 29 matches for the La Liga outfit last season, scoring three goals while grabbing five assists in all competitions. More importantly, he had made an average of 1.6 tackles, 1.0 interceptions and 1.4 clearances per game in the previous campaign (Stats via Whoscored).
What Does The Spanish Fullback Offer On The Pitch?
The Betis talent has enough pace in his belt to make some good runs down the left flank. He is also a capable defender in his own half as he is a difficult man to beat in 1v1 situations. Firpo has proven his worth in the opposing half by adding a few goals and assists to his game last season. The Spaniard has all the makings to compete with Andrew Robertson for a left-back berth in Jurgen Klopp’s starting XI next term.
However, the Betis defender won’t be guaranteed a regular starting place at Anfield which could hamper his long-term growth as a player. Thus, it could be a gamble for the player if he does decide to switch clubs in search of greener pastures ahead of the new season.
Should Klopp Sign Him?
At 22, Firpo still has some room to improve his game and Klopp could be the ideal manager to get the most out of his skillset. It makes sense for Liverpool to go after the Spaniard who could come in and help them pip Manchester City in the Premier League title race next season.
