After winning the Champions League, Liverpool confirmed that they are parting ways with English forward Daniel Sturridge who is set to be out of contract. The striker never really managed to hit the heights of the 2013-14 campaign and only managed to play bits and pieces role since Jurgen Klopp took over.
Another raid on a player with Liverpool connection!
We believe that Rangers should look to sign him in the summer now that he is available on a free transfer. Steven Gerrard has already shown in the past year that players with Liverpool connection can be a success at Ibrox. The club should once again look to make a move, and Gerrard’s influence can be a significant factor once again.
Sturridge’s downfall has mostly been credited to his injuries and not because of his loss of abilities. The Englishman struggled with various injuries in the past, but in the last year, he remained mostly fit and available for the Reds.
The striker made 27 appearances for Liverpool and scored four goals and provided two assists last season. He looked decent whenever he was on the pitch for the Reds in the previous season, but it was clear that he didn’t fit into Jurgen Klopp’s philosophy. There is no doubt to us that he can be a big success in the Premiership if he is fit and available and he can be a major game changer for Steven Gerrard.
We expect the Gers to add a new striker in the summer as Kyle Lafferty is expected to leave the club. Alfredo Morelos is also attracting interest from various quarters, and if Rangers get the right bid, then they might look to sell the Colombian.
Can Sturridge deliver for Rangers?
Even if Morelos stays, the club should sign a striker and Sturridge will be a top bet. The striker is known for his lethal finishing, and he also has that ability to create something out of nothing. Various injuries have reduced his pace over the years, but he still has quick feet, which helps him to get out of tight spaces.
His wages can be an issue for Gerrard, but as will come on a free transfer, Rangers can use the saved up transfer funds to pay his wages. We expect some English clubs to be interested in Sturridge as he still has some years left in him, but with Gerrard at the helm at Ibrox, this is a deal we can see happening.
