Rangers recently completed the signing of George Edmundson from Oldham Athletic after fighting off a lot of competition for him. However, Gerrard has expressed (The Scottish Sun) that he still wants to add one more defender to his squad. After all, he has lost two defenders from last season in the form of Joe Worrall and Gareth McAuley.
We think that the next defender coming in should be an experienced candidate as the Gers have got two young defenders in the form of Edmundson and Nikola Katic. Edmundson especially might take some time to settle in as he is yet to be tested at this level. Therefore here are three experienced defenders Gerrard can go after.
Neven Subotic
The two times Bundesliga winner’s contract with Saint Etienne is set to expire in the next few days, and he is available on a free transfer. Subotic is still just 30 and has the experience of playing in over 250 games for Borussia Dortmund. He has played in big competitions including the Champions League, and this could turn out to be a massive coup for Gerrard in the summer.
Some other clubs could likely want to look at him, but the Gers can offer him a chance to play in the Europa League (If they make through the qualifiers) and on a free transfer, Rangers can get a top signing.
Martin Skrtel
The Slovakian has been linked on and off with Rangers for quite sometime now. His wages are likely going to be a big issue, according to us. Skrtel’s contract has expired with Fenerbahce, and if there are no better offers for him, then Gerrard might be able to get his hands on the defender.
Moreover, the manager has played with Skrtel, and maybe his relationship with the centre back might be able to influence the defender’s decision. Skrtel might be 34, but he made 40 appearances for the Turkish heavyweights last season and is still going strong at the top level.
Cristian Zapata
The 58 times Colombian international is set to leave AC Milan and is going to be available on a free transfer. The defender has the experience of playing in the La Liga as well as the Serie A. The 32-year-old is known to be strong and robust in his challenges along with being reliable in the air. He also has that physical side to his game which would make his job of settling in the Scottish Premiership easier. The defender made 20 appearances for AC Milan last season including 5 in the Europa League.
