Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live (via the Express), former Liverpool midfielder Don Hutchison has urged Jurgen Klopp to bring Red Bull Leipzig forward Timo Werner to Anfield this summer. Hutchison believes the German striker would be an excellent fit for the Reds and has told BBC Radio Live 5 (transcripted via the Express), “I would go for Timo Werner at RB Leipzig. It’s only a matter of time before Bayern Munich try and buy him.
“He’s the right age, he’s 23.”
Hutchison also went on to add, “When I look at [Sadio] Mane, [Roberto] Firmino and [Mohamed] Salah, they’ve played so much football over the last two years, it’s inevitable that one will lose form or get injured.
“If Liverpool are going to try and challenge for Manchester City this season, they’ve got to have guys ready to step in like Werner or Guedes.
“They need people of that ilk who can come into the XI and strengthen the XI and make Salah and Firmino fight for their place.
“No-one is disrupting that front three at the minute, which is a good thing, but I can see a scenario where one of those three could run out of gas, lose form or get injured at the start of next season.”
Klopp should consider taking Hutchison’s advice as he builds a strong case for Werner. The German frontman has enjoyed another productive campaign with RB Leipzig as he put in a string of impressive goal-scoring displays for them during the recently concluded Bundesliga season.
Why Liverpool Can Benefit From Recruiting Werner
The Merseyside outfit has sometimes lacked a bit of firepower in the final third as evidenced by their underwhelming performance against Tottenham Hotspur in the UEFA Champions League final when Roberto Firmino failed to put in a good enough shift up top.
However, the Brazilian international could be more effective if he is being deployed in his natural number 10 position rather than as a false-9 striker. Hence, adding a prolific striker like Werner will not only benefit Firmino’s game but will also help Jurgen Klopp’s men compete on all fronts in the upcoming campaign.
The German Forward’s Impressive Season At Leipzig
The 23-year-old talent has scored 19 times while creating ten assists in 37 matches for Ralf Rangnick’s team last season across all competitions. Werner’s incredible contributions helped Leipzig claim an impressive third-place finish in the German top-flight standings in the previous campaign.
Will Werner Be A Good Fit For The Merseyside Outfit?
The German international has blistering pace under his belt which enables him to run with the ball at full speed behind the opposing backline. More importantly, he is an accomplished finisher inside the opposition penalty box and so we can expect him to score a lot of goals if he decides to move to the Premier League someday.
The former Stuttgart forward has all the skills to be a success story at Anfield. Thus, it makes a lot of sense for the Reds to go after him in this off-season.
