According to the reports from the Mirror as cited by Football.London, Tottenham Hotspur are interested in signing Everton’s fullback Lucas Digne in the summer. However, Everton wants cash plus Danny Rose involved in the deal. It is believed that Mauricio Pochettino wanted Digne last summer as well when Barcelona were looking to ship him away from the club, but the Argentine manager was cash strapped then.
Everton won the race for him in the summer of 2018, and the Frenchman has been outstanding for the Merseyside club. Now it’s being said that Pochettino will have the cash to spend after he guided Spurs to a Champions League finals against all the odds.
Digne contributed with four goals and five assists in all competitions last season and Everton now believe that his value has doubled from the £18m they paid for Barcelona last season. They also should be in a strong position to negotiate for the 25-year-old as he has his contract at Goodison Park until 2023.
What will Digne add to Pochettino’s squad?
Digne is a typical modern-day fullback as he has impressive pace and always looks to bomb forward at every opportunity. He tends to go into rash challenges and tackles here and there, but overall, he can do his job defensively. However, there is no doubt that the Frenchman is at his best when he receives the ball in attacking positions.
Blessed with an excellent left foot, Digne can whip in delicious crosses. The left-back can carry the ball out from the back, and he should settle in well in Spurs’ system as Pochettino relies heavily on his fullbacks to provide width.
Should Spurs exchange Rose to land Digne?
We are not sure how much cash would Everton demand if Rose is involved in the deal. We think that both players are pretty much on par with each other and Spurs shouldn’t look to pay more than £10m if Rose goes the other way. The only thing where Digne has the edge over Rose is that he is still 25, whereas Rose is 28. Digne is at the peak of his career, and he is a much more long term option for Spurs.
Rose had indicated previously that he is willing to move away from Spurs. We think that if Everton doesn’t demand an excessive amount of cash in the deal, then this could turn out to be a good move for everyone involved.
