According to Foot Mercato, Everton are among the clubs eyeing a move for LOSC Lille striker Rafael Leao. The Portuguese sensation has emerged as a transfer target for a host of clubs across Europe, and a move away from Lille could be on the horizon. It is believed that Everton are keen on signing this young forward this summer. But, the Toffees could face stiff competition with Valencia also interested in his services.
Rafael Leao’s success at Lille
A product of the Sporting CP youth academy, Leao joined LOSC Lille for a free transfer last summer. And after initially making a slow start to the season, the youngster became a crucial part of the Lille attack. He scored eight goals and provided two assists in what was his debut campaign in the French top flight.
Leao made 24 league appearances, only 16 of which were starts. But, his impressive return in front of goal is rather evident if we look at his scoring statistics as the 20-year-old helped Lille finish second in the league table this past season.
However, Leao’s impressive campaign at the club was hugely overshadowed by the emergence of Nicolas Pepe, who has become one of the most wanted attackers in the ongoing summer transfer window.
What can Leao offer to the table?
Leao is mainly known for his excellent positioning in the attack that not only helps him link-up with teammates in the final third but also make him a real threat for the opposition defence. He is always on the lookout for runs in behind the defence, which becomes quite useful when playing against a defensively rigid opponent.
The young forward is also blessed with immense pace – making him a genuine threat on the counter while his physically imposing 188cm figure enables him to repel challenges from defenders – making him a better ball-carrier overall. It also gives him a considerable advantage in the air, with the 20-year-old winning over one headed duels per game this past season.
Should Everton make a move for Leao?
The addition of Leao could be beneficial for Everton as they prepare for life without Cenk Tosun next season. The Turkish international has struggled with the lack of a goalscoring form and has been linked with a move away from the club.
Leao, in that regard, could be a smart replacement. The Portuguese youngster has the technical as well as the physical prowess to thrive under Marco Silva at Everton. Besides, the fact that he has attained an impressive scoring statistics at Lille, means he could give Dominic Calvert-Lewin a run for his money next season.
