According to the latest reports from BBC, Motherwell’s midfielder David Turnbull is set to sign a four-year contract with Celtic as he decided to snub Norwich City even though he had reportedly travelled down south to sign a contract. Turnbull’s transfer saga has seen more plot twists than Martin Scorsese’s Shutter Island, and we are hopeful now that this is the end of it.
It is reported that Celtic had made a new and successful offer which did the trick in the final moments. That is why you don’t publish the happenings of a transfer deal on social media. So much for Celtic’s talk of ”moving on” after tabling the ”magnificent offer” if Turnbull didn’t accept the initial proposal.
Did Celtic learn a lesson from McGinn’s saga?
The final fee which is agreed on is said to be £3.25m. Last season, Celtic had a chance to sign Scottish international John McGinn, but they weren’t able to match Aston Villa’s valuation of 2.7m. The Hoops had a few bids rejected for McGinn earlier, and Aston Villa took advantage of Celtic’s miserly approach.
It seems like the club learnt its lesson last season and realised to get the top talents, one might have to go overboard once in a while. The money involved in football has changed the game entirely in terms of transfers and clubs like Celtic cannot afford to live in the past if they want to compete with even Championships outfits.
Nevertheless, with everything behind, the most important thing now is that Turnbull would turn up at Parkhead for the next season and if he goes on to perform well, all this saga and money involved will be forgotten in a few weeks.
What can Turnbull bring at Parkhead?
The young midfielder enjoyed a breakthrough season at Fir Park as he managed to score 16 goals from midfield. Turnbull is a dynamic player who always looks to make things happen when he has the ball, and his link-up play and movement are sharp.
The Scotsman’s composure in front of goal though is something which stood out last season as often young players are indecisive when they get the ball in crucial areas. With Olivier Ntcham claiming that moving away from Parkhead is a possibility this summer, we feel that probably made Celtic go all out for Turnbull even though the deal was in doldrums at one point. Turnbull though will have to fight to earn a first team spot in this Celtic lineup.
The Hoops might get some snide remarks on how they handled this whole saga, but at the end of the day, they managed to get their man. Or have they?
